Losing your only car key, or every key you own, used to mean a tow truck and a long wait at the dealership. Today, for most cars, trucks and SUVs, a mobile automotive locksmith can cut and program a brand-new key right where your vehicle is parked. Titan Lock & Key does this every day for drivers in Naperville, Aurora, Joliet, Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Wheaton, Downers Grove and across DuPage, Will and Kane counties.

This guide explains how car key replacement works when all keys are lost, the different types of car keys and key fobs, what we need from you, and how to avoid getting stuck again.

What "all keys lost" really means

Locksmiths split car key jobs into two kinds. When you still have one working key, we simply copy it: cut a duplicate and program the new chip alongside the old one. When all keys are lost, there is no key to copy, so the new key has to be created from scratch. That means two separate jobs:

  • Cutting the blade so it turns the door lock and ignition. We cut it from the vehicle's key code or by decoding the lock itself.
  • Programming the electronics (transponder chip, remote buttons or smart key) so the car recognizes the new key and lets the engine start.

Both steps can usually be done on site from our service van, so there is no need to tow the car anywhere.

Types of car keys we replace

Transponder chip keys

Most cars built since the late 1990s have a small chip inside the key head. The car's immobilizer reads the chip, and if it doesn't recognize it, the engine will crank but not start, even with a perfectly cut blade. A replacement transponder key must be programmed to your vehicle.

Remote head keys and flip keys

These combine the key blade, transponder chip and lock/unlock buttons in one piece. Flip keys fold the blade into the fob. Both the chip and the remote buttons need programming.

Smart keys and push-to-start keys

Proximity or keyless-entry fobs let you unlock the doors and press a start button while the fob stays in your pocket. Smart key programming connects the new fob to the vehicle's computer. Most smart keys also hide an emergency blade inside, which we cut as well.

Laser-cut (high-security) keys

Laser-cut or sidewinder keys have a groove milled into the side of the blade instead of teeth on the edge. They need a special cutting machine, which we carry in the van.

Standard mechanical keys

Older vehicles, trailers and some work trucks still use plain cut keys with no chip. These are the quickest to replace.

How on-site car key replacement works

  1. You call with the year, make and model. That tells us which key, blank and programming method your vehicle needs.
  2. We confirm ownership. We check your ID against the registration or title before making any key. This protects you and keeps keys out of the wrong hands.
  3. We cut the key. Using the key code or by decoding a lock, we cut the blade on our mobile key machine.
  4. We program the key or fob through the vehicle's diagnostic port with professional programming equipment.
  5. We test everything: doors, trunk, ignition, start, and the remote buttons.

If you lost your keys somewhere they could be found, ask us to erase the old keys from the car's memory during programming. Once that's done, a lost fob can no longer start your vehicle.

Key fob replacement, repair and programming

Not every key fob problem means you need a new fob. Common situations include:

  • Dead key fob battery: buttons stop working or range drops. Often fixed with a fresh battery.
  • Broken key fob shell: the case cracks or the blade falls out. The electronics can often be moved into a new shell.
  • Buttons work but the car won't start: usually a transponder or immobilizer issue that needs programming.
  • Fob lost or damaged by water: a replacement key fob is cut and programmed.

Cars, trucks, SUVs and semi trucks

We make and program keys for most domestic and import vehicles, including cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, vans and semi trucks. Fleet operators and dealerships also use us for spare keys so vehicles aren't sitting idle.

What to have ready when you call

  • Year, make and model of the vehicle (the VIN is even better)
  • Your photo ID
  • Registration or title showing you own the vehicle
  • Where the vehicle is parked

How to avoid an all-keys-lost situation

The easiest fix is a spare. Copying a working key is quicker and simpler than creating one from nothing. If you only have one car key or one push-to-start fob, get a spare made now, keep it somewhere safe at home, and you'll never need a tow for a lost key.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a car key if I lost all my keys?

Yes, for most cars, trucks and SUVs. We cut a new blade from the vehicle's key code or by decoding a lock, then program the transponder chip or smart key to your car on site. We'll confirm ownership with your ID and registration first.

Do I need to tow my car to the dealer for a new key?

No. We come to wherever the vehicle is parked and cut and program the key there with the equipment in our service van.

What is a transponder key and why does it need programming?

A transponder key has a small chip in the head that the car's immobilizer reads before it lets the engine start. A newly cut key will turn the ignition, but the car won't start until the chip is programmed to that vehicle.

Can you program push-to-start and smart keys?

Yes. We program proximity smart keys and push-to-start fobs for most makes, and cut the emergency blade hidden inside the fob.

My key fob stopped working. Do I need a new one?

Not always. A dead battery or a broken shell is a common cause and can often be fixed without a new fob. If the electronics have failed or the car no longer recognizes the fob, it will need to be replaced and programmed.

Can you erase my lost keys from the car?

Yes. During programming we can remove old keys from the vehicle's memory, so a lost key or fob can no longer start the car.

Do I need to buy the car key or key fob before you come?

No. We keep most car keys in stock in our service van, including transponder keys, remote head keys, flip keys and smart key fobs for most makes and models. You don't need to order a key online or buy one from the dealer. Just tell us the year, make and model when you call and we'll bring the right key.

Do you make keys for semi trucks and work trucks?

Yes. We make and program keys for semi trucks, pickups, vans and fleet vehicles as well as cars and SUVs.
